Minno Newsletter

January 2025

Hello, Ice fishing enthusiasts!

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Bobbers Down newsletter, your go-to source for all things ice fishing in the Fredenberg area! Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to the world of hard-water fishing, we’ve got the latest updates, tips, and local insights to help you make the most of your time out on the ice.

As we kick off the season, we’re excited to report that the ice is thick and solid, providing the perfect conditions for some serious fishing. Fish Lake and Island Lake are already producing great catches, and the bite has been strong! Store Manager, Emily has been doing well on both reservoirs (and a couple of secret lakes) and reports anywhere from 13” to 16” of really good ice.

Fish Lake

Walleye & Crappie Galore!

Reports from Fish Lake are promising, with anglers pulling in walleye and crappies with regularity. Walleye anglers are finding success using both tip-ups and jigging setups, with live bait such as chubs and lite pike minnows proving to be the best option. Shiners have proven to be effective in the evening. Reports are 50/50 as to jigging vs dead sticking.

As the days get longer, try to target those deeper pockets—10 to 15 feet—where the fish tend to congregate, especially later in the day. Early morning and evening bites are also very productive, so be sure to get out there at the crack of dawn to take advantage of the walleye’s active feeding time. Keep in mind that targeting fish in shallower water also means they tend to spook easier.

Crappie fishing is also in full swing! Captain Jarrid Houston of Houston’s Guide Service tells us that anglers are seeing success in the 10-15 foot range as these fish start their migration to their deeper, mid-winter haunts.  A simple presentation has been the key.  Small tungsten jigs or spoons tipped with a full minnow has been the key to success.  Capt. Houston says it  has been a “window bite”, so patience is key.

Fish Lake Regulations Walleye possession limit: all under 13" and greater than 17" must be immediately released except one over 26" in possession. Northern Pike possession limit: 3. 2 with one over 40" all pike between 30" and 40" must be immediately released. Crappie possession limit:5 Sunnies Possession Limit: 5

Island Lake

A Northern Minnesota Treasure

Island Lake is off to a solid start this winter, and there’s no shortage of fish to be caught. Island doesn’t see as much pressure as the other lakes in the area. It can be a challenge to fish in the winter but with some homework and patience, it can pay off big! Walleye, crappies, and the occasional northern pike are coming up through the holes. Anglers have been reporting good catches in the 12-20 foot range, with walleye hitting jigs tipped with minnows.

If you’re targeting pike, be sure to set out a large shiner or sucker on a tip-up near the drop-offs; they’ve been active, and the bite is on!

Island Lake Regulations Walleye possession limit: 10 between 10" and 15" with one over 20" Northern Pike possession limit: 2 with one over 40" all pike between 30" and 40" must be immediately released.

tips for staying safe on the ice

With the recent cold temperatures, it’s no surprise that the ice is thickening quickly and ice fishing season is officially underway! While we’re all excited to get out there, it’s important to remember that safety should always be a priority. The cold may have created good conditions, but it’s important to bring your safety gear, including a throw rope, ice picks, and a flotation device in case of an emergency.

Stick to well-traveled areas that are known for good ice coverage. We get firsthand reports all day at the Minno-ette so feel free to check in with us for the latest.
